Solar Battery Storage in India 2026: Lithium vs Lead Acid, Prices & Brands

Solar Battery Storage: Everything You Need to Know

Adding a battery to your solar system lets you store excess energy for use at night or during power cuts. With electricity tariffs rising and battery prices falling, storage is becoming a smart addition for Indian homes.

Lithium-Ion vs Lead Acid: Head-to-Head

ParameterLithium-Ion (LFP)Lead Acid (Tubular)
Cost per kWh₹12,000 - ₹18,000₹6,000 - ₹10,000
Cycle Life3,000 - 6,000 cycles800 - 1,500 cycles
Depth of Discharge90-95%50-60%
Usable Capacity90-95% of rated50-60% of rated
Weight (per kWh)10-12 kg30-40 kg
Lifespan10-15 years3-5 years
MaintenanceNoneWater top-up every 3-6 months
True Cost per kWh per Cycle₹3-5₹6-10

Verdict: Lithium-ion is more expensive upfront but 2-3x cheaper per cycle over its lifetime. For new installations, lithium is the clear winner.

Popular Battery Options in India

Lithium-Ion Batteries

  • Luminous Li-ON: 2.5/5 kWh | ₹45,000-₹90,000 | Built for Indian conditions, wide service network
  • Livguard LiFePO4: 2.56/5.12 kWh | ₹40,000-₹85,000 | Good value, BMS included
  • Amaron Quanta Li: 3.5/5 kWh | ₹55,000-₹95,000 | Premium build quality
  • Pylontech US2000/US3000: 2.4/3.5 kWh | ₹55,000-₹75,000 | Stackable, popular globally

Lead Acid Batteries (still common)

  • Luminous Red Charge: 150Ah/200Ah | ₹12,000-₹18,000 | Most popular in India
  • Exide Inva Master: 150Ah/200Ah | ₹13,000-₹19,000 | Reliable, good warranty
  • Microtek Tall Tubular: 150Ah | ₹11,000-₹15,000 | Budget option

How to Size Your Battery

Calculate your nighttime consumption:

  1. List appliances you want to run at night (fans, lights, fridge, WiFi router)
  2. Calculate total wattage × hours of use
  3. Add 20% buffer for efficiency losses

Example: 3 fans (75W each × 8h) + 5 lights (10W × 6h) + fridge (150W × 8h) + router (15W × 8h) = 3,420 Wh = ~3.5 kWh usable. With lithium (90% DoD), you need a 4 kWh battery. With lead acid (50% DoD), you need 7 kWh.

Should You Add a Battery?

  • Yes, if: You have frequent power cuts, high evening/night consumption, or time-of-use tariffs
  • Maybe later, if: You have reliable grid power and net metering — selling excess to grid is simpler
  • No, if: Budget is tight — invest in more panels first, add battery later when prices drop further
